I know spring is here.  I have been watching a pair of sandhill cranes wading down the creek behind my house.  It was pretty funny to see the male decide to take a bath in this shallow creek.  He would hunker down and splash with his wings, then stand up and preen for a couple of minutes and repeat the process.  This pair was oblivious to me watching their antics.  I am wondering if they are going to nest here.  I will let you know next month!
Please check out the calendar on our website.  We are really excited to offer two new events.  In Tucson we found for the first time Peruvian Quartz Crystals.  On April 13th, Brenda will channel a five-minute reading on how to work with your crystal and what it will do for you.
Then on May 4th, we are excited to introduce Jean T. and Bob G. who will be here to offer crystal healing sessions.  My experiences with them have been wonderful and extraordinary.  They are offering both half and one-hour sessions.  Sign up now to hold your place, as there has been a lot of interest in these appointments.

Featured - Apophyllite
Discovered in the early 1800s, Apophyllite comes in clear, white, green, yellow, pink, violet, and brown (rarely).  The crystals form in a pyramid shape with the top being blunted rather than peaked.  If this shape is missing, the crystals look more like a cube.  The hardness of Apophyllite is 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs Scale.  An interesting characteristic of Apophyllite is that if the crystals are heated, they will flake apart due to the loss of water from the crystal.  This is probably where the name originated.  Coming from the Greek words, Apo, which means apart, off or away and Phyllos, which means leaf, the stone literally will leaf apart when water is lost.  Due to the water content they also conduct electricity.

Some of the minerals which occur with Apophyllite are Stilbite, Natrolite, Heulandite, Cavansite, Prehnite and other Zeolites.  Apophyllite is found in ancient lava and basalt flows.  The crystals formed in geodes that were created from molten rock.  Basically, they formed in lava bubbles.  Apophyllite is found in great quantities in India, especially around Poona, but it also found in the Christmas Mine in Arizona.

There are several misconceptions about Apophyllite.  The first is that it is a mineral.  That is technically untrue.  They are three minerals that have similar chemistry.  The first is Fluor-Apophyllite which can be clear, white, green, yellow or violet.  The pale green and yellow specimens may fluoresce. Hydroxy-Apophyllite is white or clear and non-fluorescent.  The third is Natro-Apophyllite which is brown, yellow or clear and also non-fluorescent. Fluor-Apophyllite is the most abundant as is the Hydroxy-Apophyllite.  The Natro-Apophyllite is quite rare and found in only a few locations.

Another misconception is that Apophyllite is part of the Zeolite group.  Due to the structure, the subclassification is different though it does have some similar properties to the Zeolite minerals.  One distinction though is that if Zeolites lose water when heated, they are able to reabsorb water whereas, Apophyllite is unable to reabsorb any lost water.  Both Zeolites and Apophyllite are often found in the same environments and often together on one piece.

Areas in which Apophyllite is found include Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, India (especially around Poona), Ireland (Northern), Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Nova Scotia, Scotland, and the United States (Arizona, Michigan (UP), New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin (Douglas County).

 Metaphysical Properties:
Apophyllite is a gentle stone of truth that works quite hard.  The uplifting energy may be used to help a person or to create higher energies in a room by placing pieces in the area. It is a stone of ascension and will help one with meditation, living in the present moment, psychic development, and connecting to higher realms and guides.  Green Apophyllite connects with the heart chakra and with nature elements such as plants, animals, and nature spirits.  The green also signifies growth, healing, and a time of rebirth.  The White Apophyllite helps with astral travel, accessing the Akashic Records, and clearing one’s mind.  It may also help one to get back on track with their spiritual path if there were events that caused them to become disillusioned.
